Congratulations, Mr O’Leary- Top of the Class!
5th June 2019
Congratulations to our colleague Mr Eoghan O’Leary on receiving a Diploma of Excellence for his recent nomination as a finalist in the Award for Irish Teachers of Mathematics, hosted in the Aula Maxima in UCC. This prestigious prize, awarded annually...by the Irish Mathematical Trust, was affectionately dubbed the ‘Oscars of Mathematics’ by keynote speaker Prof. Stephen Buckley, MRIA, head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in Maynooth University.
The jury, drawn from academics, teachers and a nominated member of the Royal Irish Academy, had the difficult task of choosing 7 finalists from the 150 entries. The finalists all showed exceptional ingenuity in promoting mathematics whilst supporting, as well as challenging, their students.
The jury commented that “Eoghan is the quintessential educator. He has always been generous with his time and with his resources, helping to create a culture of sharing within the maths department and the larger mathematics teacher community. Eoghan’s Mathematical expertise reflect in his practice as the students have 100% confidence in him.”
As Eoghan says, “The level of satisfaction of the students is communicated by them and by their parents to me in many ways. This could take the form of a student saying they are hoping to pursue a career in mathematics because they enjoy the subject so much, or it could be a parent of a child who has struggled with maths in the past, saying he is enjoying the subject for the first time.”
This is the second year in a row that Mr O’Leary has been a finalist, narrowly missing out on the top prize. Here’s hoping that 2020 will be lucky number three! Read moreLess
